Fuel Windows and Caution Strategy in NASCAR 25

In NASCAR 25, a caution flag isn’t just a safety pause. It’s a chess move. How you respond to it, and how you position yourself for it before it happens, is one of the biggest strategic levers in the game.

Start with your fuel window. Before the race starts, set the fuel consumption to whatever multiplier fits your race length — keep in mind you need at least seven percent race length for fuel and tire wear to actually matter in NASCAR 25. Once you’re running, count laps. Know roughly when you need to pit and build your strategy around that window, not the caution clock.

The golden moment is when a caution comes out when you’re within a few laps of needing to pit anyway. You can come in, take tires and fuel, and rejoin under yellow without losing track position to green-flag pitters. That’s free real estate. When you’re five to ten laps out from your window and a caution flies, pit immediately.

The dangerous move is pitting under caution when you just pitted. Sometimes it’s the right call for tires, but you lose a lap or track position. Think through whether the tire advantage over the next run is actually worth what you’re giving up in position.

Wave-around rules and lucky dog work in NASCAR 25, so if you’re one lap down when a caution comes out, know your options. Taking the free pass and restarting on the lead lap can completely change your race.

When you’re leading and a caution comes out with good tire life remaining, consider staying out. Track position is currency at NASCAR 25 ovals. A car that leads the restart often leads the next fifteen laps even if the chasing cars have fresher rubber, just because they have to fight through traffic first.

Think a lap ahead. The teams that win races aren’t just reacting to cautions, they’re positioning for them.
