Daytona FAQ

In qualifying, it comes down to line and commitment: enter low, let the banking carry the car through the turns, run straight on the backstretch, and never lift in a Cup car. In the race, the fastest way around is the draft, because the quickest line is the one with the most help. Stay tucked behind another car and time your moves, since breaking out of the draft costs speed.

Daytona is a drag reduction track, so prioritize straight-line speed: start around 80 percent grille tape and add more if engine temps stay cool, run higher tire pressures than at downforce tracks, and take downforce out of the splitter and spoiler. Gear the car to reach top RPM at the end of the backstretch. For qualifying, push everything, but for the race back the tape off 5 to 10 percent so the engine survives in the pack.

Expect it and plan for it, because at Daytona a multi-car wreck is a question of when, not if. Run near the front without leading, and back out early when the pack goes three-wide, since the middle car has nowhere to go. When cars get sideways ahead of you, lift early and keep an escape route open to the inside or outside.

No. Leading with no drafting partner is the fastest way to go backwards, because the pack will swallow you. If you end up in front early, either drop back into the pack or make sure you have a committed partner on your bumper. The lead is for the last five laps, not the first fifty.

When you are alongside another car, move slightly toward them to disrupt their air and slow them down. That is side drafting, and it is the key to passing without losing the pack behind you. Pull out, side draft the car ahead, and let the run carry you past.

All four: Cup, OReilly, Trucks, and ARCA. The track is the same, but the cars change everything, from speed and handling to draft behavior and racecraft. Cup cars are the most stable, and ARCA is where most Career Mode players learn Daytona first.
